Australian Costume Trends 2026

Data report · Updated 31 August 2026

Australians do not leave costumes to the last minute. They leave them to the second-last minute — and then stop buying altogether. This report is based on aggregated order data from Costumes in Australia covering April 2023 to August 2026.

The five findings

  1. The costume deadline is not the event day. Across three Halloweens, our busiest ordering day fell 5 to 10 days before 31 October — never on it.
  2. On Halloween itself, ordering collapses. In 2025, 31 October took just 10% of the volume of the season's peak day. That share has fallen three years running: 21% (2023), 12% (2024), 10% (2025).
  3. Book Week 2026 followed the identical shape. 85.1% of the season's orders were placed before Book Week began, and the peak day was 18 August — four days before the week started.
  4. Distance changes behaviour. Western Australian shoppers order 24.5 days ahead of Halloween on average; New South Wales shoppers, 19.1 days. A five-day gap that tracks freight time from Melbourne.
  5. Monday is costume day. 18.1% of Halloween-season orders are placed on a Monday, against just 10.1% on a Friday — the weekend is when families decide, Monday is when they buy.

Halloween: the peak arrives early, then falls off a cliff

The pattern is consistent and it is getting sharper. Shoppers are compressing into the final week — the share of season orders placed in the last seven days rose from 7.9% (2023) to 14.8% (2024) to 16.4% (2025) — while simultaneously abandoning the final three days, which fell from 3.3% to 2.2% over the same period.

The likeliest explanation is delivery maths rather than a change of heart. Once standard post can no longer arrive in time, demand does not shift later; it disappears.

Book Week 2026: the same curve, six weeks earlier

Book Week ran 22–28 August 2026. Across the season (15 July – 28 August), 85.1% of orders arrived before the week began. Ordering peaked on Tuesday 18 August, then declined every day through the event itself.

Nearly a quarter of the entire season (23.8%) landed in the six days from 16 to 21 August. For schools and parents, that is the window that matters; for retailers, it is where the stock decision is won or lost.

Where Australia buys, and how far ahead

Halloween-season orders by state, three years combined (orders with a resolvable shipping state)
StateShare of ordersAverage days ordered before 31 October
New South Wales33.5%19.1
Victoria26.5%19.3
Queensland22.1%21.9
Western Australia9.2%24.5
South Australia5.1%21.3
Australian Capital Territory1.9%19.4
Tasmania1.2%22.1
Northern Territory0.5%23.5

The eastern seaboard accounts for 82.1% of Halloween ordering, but the states furthest from our Melbourne warehouse plan earliest — Western Australia and the Northern Territory both order more than 23 days out.

Halloween in Australia is not only for children

Among October 2025 items whose title names an age group, the split between children's and adult costumes was almost exactly even. Dress-up here is a household activity, not just a school-gate one.

Search demand: how Australia compares

Third-party search data (Semrush, Australian database, August 2026) puts monthly Australian search volume for halloween costumes at 27,100, making Australia the fifth-largest market worldwide for the term behind the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and India.

Book Week is the mirror image. Of an estimated 19,900 global monthly searches for book week costumes, 18,100 — roughly 91% — come from Australia. It is close to a uniquely Australian search behaviour.

Methodology

  • Source: aggregated orders placed on costumesinaustralia.com.au between 11 April 2023 and 31 August 2026. Cancelled orders are excluded throughout. Absolute order volumes are commercial-in-confidence and are not published.
  • Halloween season is defined as 15 September to 31 October.
  • Book Week season is defined as 15 July to 28 August 2026. Book Week 2026 ran 22–28 August.
  • State figures use the shipping address on the order. Orders without a resolvable Australian state are excluded from the state table.
  • Lead time is calendar days between order date and 31 October of the same year.
  • Age split counts only items whose product title explicitly names an age group, so it covers a subset of the catalogue.
  • Search volumes are third-party estimates from Semrush and are not our data. Everything else on this page is first-party order data.
  • All figures are aggregated. No individual customer data is published or shared.
