Off With Their Heads! The Queen of Hearts

The Queen of Hearts is of course the bad tempered monarch from the Alice in Wonderland stories, famed for demanding the execution of anyone who annoys her for the slightest reason.  Played by Helena Bonham Carter in the latest film adaptations, she’s seen many different incarnations so Queen of Heart Costumes come in quite a few different varieties.

You may prefer the classic Disney version with the full skirt and black, white and red playing card theme, or if you’re up for playing up your mad side for the evening you could go for an outfit that reflects Helena Bonham Carter’s typically eccentric and ever-so-slightly creepy interpretation of the character.   For the grownups, there are lots of sexy plays on the theme with stacks of lace, corsetry and tulle underskirts to choose from.  This is also a great outfit to accessorise, as you can look out for tiaras, sceptres giant playing cards and cute hold up stockings to complete the look, depending on which incarnation of the crazy queen you decide to opt for.  The opportunities for make-up are also almost endless – Helena’s version calls for immaculate white foundation, drawn on eyebrows and tiny heart shaped lips, teamed with the now famous red wig (a play on Elizabeth the 1st, perhaps?), but if you’re not into the concept of layering make-up on in that way, you could quite easily keep the playing card theme by sticking to your regular palette, and adding a small heart drawn on in eye-liner and filled in with red lipstick.  Make sure to set it with a little translucent powder or it will end up smeared across your face by the end of the night!

Queen of Heart Costumes is one of those costumes that you can go as wild or conservative as you want with – it’s a great opportunity to have fun and experiment!
