Fancy dress costume ideas for the 50s decade

Fancy dress costumes are great and choosing a 50s costume and having a 50s decade party is really fun. The 50s are a bit of an unknown decade, unlike the sixties and seventies that were known for their hippie clothing and big hair, and the eighties and nineties that were about mini skirts and high heels. The 50s, and you might want think of movies that were set in the 50s, was possibly at Grease, Sandy and Danny, and Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio. The 50s were also about strong women and feminists, women coming out of the housekeeping roles and into the workplace. Men were big and bold and dapper. You can get ideas for online costumes on the internet or you can go to a costume shop if you have one nearby.

Buying costumes or hiring costumes

There is a choice between buying or hiring costumes or of course finding costumes online. Some people like to make their own costumes and this is a creative and lovely thing to do provided you have the materials. Sometimes making your own costume can actually work out to be a lot more expensive than buying or hiring a costume. The 50s costumes are quite specific so it is not that easy to just take something out of your wardrobe, whereas you will probably find that you have clothing for the 20s, 60 and 70s, which were more easier decades or perhaps we should say more obvious decades.

Think through the theme of your costume party carefully and make sure it is a theme that you will find fun but also that your guests will find fun. Make party invitations in the party theme, do the music and decor in the party theme and have fun. Buy or rent a 50s costume and get into the blast of the party!
