August Book Week Dress-Up Ideas for Teachers!

G'day to all our dedicated Aussie educators! August brings with it the excitement of Book Week, a special time when schools across Australia are brimming with stories and imagination. It's not just the kids who get to have all the fun though – teachers, this is your chance to dive into the whimsy of literature and get your creative juices flowing.

Here are some ripper dress-up ideas inspired by some iconic books, to help you step up your Book Week game:

Mens King Neptune Costume: Aquaman - step aside! Sweet Neptune - let this true king rule. This Mens Deluxe King Neptune Costume is fit for a king, and that king can & will be you! This Sea God Neptune Costume includes all the accessories that any aspiring God of the Seas could desire.

The Magic Pudding by Norman Lindsay: Embrace this Aussie classic by dressing up as Bunyip Bluegum, the koala, with a snazzy suit and bow-tie. Don't forget your walking stick or, even better, team up with colleagues to come as the full ensemble including Bill Barnacle and Sam Sawnoff.

Possum Magic by Mem Fox: A beloved children's book that's as Australian as vegemite on toast! Transform into Grandma Poss with some possum ears, a shawl, and a pouch with little Hush peeking out. You could also carry some lamingtons and ANZAC biscuits as props.

Blinky Bill by Dorothy Wall: With a pair of overalls, a makeshift tail, and a slouch hat, you can step into the shoes of Australia's favourite mischievous koala.

Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French: Comfort is key! Dress in brown, add some rounded ears to a beanie, and you’re on your way. For added effect, sporadically 'demand carrots' from your students throughout the day.

Snugglepot and Cuddlepie by May Gibbs: The gumnut babies are as iconic as they come. Whether you go as Snugglepot, Cuddlepie, or even Mr Lizard, these characters offer a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Sporting a gumnut cap is a must!

The Treehouse Series by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton: Let your imagination run wild with this one! Whether you fancy yourself as Andy, Terry, or even Jill, throw in a few prop items like a giant banana, marshmallow shooter or a cat with a nod to the ever-expanding treehouse.

Nancy Drew or The Famous Five: For those who love a mystery, these childhood favourites are gold. Put on a classic detective look, think trench coat, magnifying glass, and notepad. Maybe even drop a few 'clues' in the classroom to engage the kids.

The Man from Snowy River by Banjo Paterson: Channel the rugged bush poet vibe with a wide-brimmed hat, boots and a sense of adventure. Bonus points if you can recite a stanza or two.

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak: This one might take a bit more DIY, but dressing up as Max with his crown and white wolf suit or as one of the Wild Things can be a hit.

Miss Honey from Matilda by Roald Dahl: A classic for many, channel the sweet-natured Miss Honey with a modest dress, cardigan, and glasses. If you're feeling a tad more wicked, Ms. Trunchbull is another unforgettable character to consider.

In the end, the goal is to foster a love of reading and imagination among your students. Whether you choose to embody an Aussie classic, a childhood favourite, or a character that's just downright fun, the spirit of Book Week lies in the magic and wonder that books bring to our lives with these book week costumes for teachers. So, teachers, go on and give it a burl – and make this August's Book Week a corker!
