Encourage your kids to read by celebrating Book Week

Reading is such a gift. Encourage your child to read. Buy or make a book week costume for your child, but don’t just buy or make any costume. Talk to your children about their favourite books and their favourite characters. Read books to them, or with them, and see who they love and who they would love to dress up as. Remember, they don’t only have to choose one character as you can easily make more than one book costume, and you can also order them online. Your kids will always use them. Once they have chosen a favourite character, think about what that character looks like and what it would take to make a costume that is recognisable as that person. Alice in Wonderland is an easy one, and Pippi Longstocking is another easy one, but it could be Sherlock Holmes or a cartoon character or a superhero, anything really. Embrace the character, embrace the book and get behind it with your child.

Book week is about reading and having fun

Reading should never be forced on anyone, rather, encouraged. Costumes brought online or from a store are a good way of thinking of favourite book characters and getting ideas for costumes. Your child might be an early reader or not. Perhaps they are taking their time in learning. Never rush your child into reading but rather, create a love for books. They can be any kind of books and yes, even comic books count. Reading is reading and you want your children to love it. Read to them if reading is still a struggle for them and even if reading is not a struggle for them, bond with your kids over books. Reading is a skill and a pleasure that kids will have for life. So when it is book week, encourage the fun. You can find a book week costume online or you can make your own.
